The Astonishing Pink Beach of Komodo Island in 2023

Pink Beach

The pink beach of Komodo Island, Indonesia has become famous for its bright red sand  and turquoise water, and the good news is that it’s quite easy to visit on a day trip from  Labuan Bajo, Flores!   Komodo Beach is actually not the only pink beach that Indonesia has to offer. There are several pinker beaches in  Komodo National Park and also  on the island of Lombok near Bali, but pink beaches tend to be very rare and there are only a handful of them worldwide! The pink beach of Komodo Island and also the equally famous (and more colorful) pink beach of Padar Island!

Origin of pink sand

Pink Beach or Pantai Merah is one of the seven pink beaches on earth and just one of the many incredible features that make Komodo a true natural wonder. The striking color of this extraordinary beach comes from microscopic animals called foraminifera, which produce a red pigment in the reef. That is why it is called “Red Beach” in the local language. Small red corals mix with the white sand to create the soft pink color  you  see on the coast.

Besides Pink Beach, several small sections along East Komodo Bay are also pink. Komodo Island, located  west of Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara, is one of the three large and numerous islands that make up the Komodo National Park, and is particularly known as the natural habitat of the Komodo dragon. The Komodo dragon is the largest living lizard and is named after the island.

What are you waiting for?

You can enjoy  panoramic views of turquoise water, green hills, blue sky and enchanting pink sand. Apart from relaxing in this picturesque landscape, there are many interesting things to do in Komodo. After enjoying the wonderful surroundings, dive into the water and discover the marine beauty of Pink Beach. The corals at Pink Beach Underwater Gardens are in excellent condition, with hundreds of  soft and hard coral species and thousands of fish species.

Pink Beach is perfect for snorkelers and beginner divers. Shallow waters  also have many species and are also fun.  Of course, the more you dare, the more you can see. Relax and work on your tan on the fabulous pink sand beach. Alternatively, you can enjoy many other water sports such as kayaking and  swimming.

If photography is your passion, this is definitely the place to capture the amazing natural beauty of the island. Stay until sunset because the views are spectacular. This uninhabited island is also the natural habitat of the Komodo dragon.

If you see animals wandering on the beach or in the water, keep your distance. Komodo dragons are excellent swimmers and can even swim between islands. Komodo dragons are wild animals that are potentially dangerous to humans, so visiting this beach without the help of an experienced guide or ranger is not recommended.

Ways to Get there

The best way to Komodo National Park is definitely through Bali. One of the most popular  destinations in Bali is Amsterdam, Bangkok, Brisbane, Darwin, Dili, Doha, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Macau, Manila, Melbourne, Moscow, Osaka, Perth, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei and Tokyo, etc.

Domestic flights are available from all major cities in Indonesia.   From Bali, local airlines fly daily  to Labuan Bajo with small jets or turboprops carrying 50 passengers. Labuan Bajo is the entryway to Komodo Island.  After arriving in Labuan Bajo, take a speedboat to Komodo. Labuan Bajo Harbor is about a 10-minute drive from Labuan Bajo Airport. You can dock at the legendary Pink Beach, but if you want to walk among coral reefs and mangroves, you can also dock on the other side of the island and walk four hours to the beach.
