1. By plane
The first way to get to Labuan Bajo in 2023 is by plane. International flights to Labuan Bajo are available via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia. Currently, Komodo International Airport does not serve all international flights, so you can fly from any Indonesian airport with direct flights to Labuan Bajo.
If you’re in Jakarta, you can fly direct from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to Komodo International Airport on Garuda Indonesia, Citylink, or Batik Air. Lion Air and Superjet offer direct flights to Labuan Bajo from Surabaya’s Juanda Airport. Wings Air also offers direct flights from Makassar’s Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport.
Last but not least, there are direct flights from Ngurah Rai International Airport. There are at least four airlines with daily direct flights from Bali. These airlines are Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, Air Asia, and Batik Air. The price of these tickets actually depends on the airline you choose and when you fly. However, flights from Ngurah Rai International Airport are slightly cheaper than other airports.
Therefore, we highly recommend taking a flight from Bali. Another tip is is booking your flights weeks or months before departure. This can potentially save you money over booking last minute to reach Labuan Bajo in 2023.
2. By Ferry
The second way to get to Labuan Bajo in 2023 is by ferry. There are a number of PELNI (National Ferry Services) operating from Benoa Port in Bali, Lembar in Lombok, Bima in Sumbawa, Surabaya and Makassar to Labuan Bajo. If you want to stay in one of these cities and explore more of Indonesia, you can take PELNI to Labuan Bajo.
Willis Ferries departs every other Saturday to Bima, Benoa and Surabaya, returning a week later on Saturday and heading east to Marapokot and Maumere. Tilongkbila ferries depart from Bima, Lembar and Benoa to Labuan Bajo every other Thursday and return the following Sunday, sailing to Makassar and other destinations in Sulawesi. Ferries from Sape (East Sumbawa) also run daily, usually arriving in Labuan Bajo between 3pm and 4pm. The return ferry leaves around 8am.
Like many Indonesian ferries, this one has a mix of trucks, buses, cars, and passengers. Prices vary depending on the cabin class you purchase, but range from $16 to $50. For the latest information or to book tickets, please visit the PELNI website or contact the PELNI office. An ojek is essentially a motorcycle taxi that carries a passenger ‘as a passenger’ on the back of the motorbike. I really recommend Ojek to travelers as it is a safe option to get around Labuan Bajo in 2023 without fear of getting lost, especially if you are traveling alone. Prices vary depending on the distance traveled, but traditional Ojek rides are quite cheap, usually starting from Rp 10,000. You can also try negotiating the fare. By car, you can visit places much further from the city, such as Cunca Wulang Waterfall and Compang To’e Melo Cultural Village.
We recommend renting a car if you are traveling with a group or family as it is more expensive than other options. It’s cheaper than renting multiple bikes, and it’s definitely more comfortable!
